THE DEVIL'S CULT (Indonesia, 2023) - MINI REVIEW
Twins, a cult and a remote village. Sounds very Indonesian!
After the death and the mysterious disappearance of the body of their father, twins Naya and Raka head to a remote village where he grew up. Reuniting with their grandmother, they quickly discover there is something very twisted happening in the village, and they are the missing key they villagers need to continue their devil worshipping.
Yet another Indonesian film set in a village, and other focusing on satanic cults and black magic. The movie feels far too same-y to countless other films of its type, with the only sense of originality being the element of twins.
Yasamin Jasem put her spooky eyes to good use in this film, but it’s yet another horror film where she is the main star running around in peril from an unseen force. Strong themes of incest feel like they’re only there to highlight a seemingly unspoken taboo in Indonesian village life.
Nothing too memorable from this title, even the make-up effects are something you’ve seen before. If you’re considering this as is your first foray into Indonesian horror - don’t! Watch Impetigore instead.
