SUBSERVIENCE - Sign Me Up For A Robot Megan Fox (USA, 2024)
Hollywood is obviously scared of AI - they just won't stop making movies about it!
“We’ve been telling you this for a long time”
Yes exactly Hollywood - we’ve been telling you this for a long time. Make movies we want to watch or risk the robots taking over!
Ever since HAL from 2001 A Space Odyssey, the idea of AI or robots controlling our lives has been great sci-fi fodder. More recently movies like I Robot and M3gan dare to explore what happens with the AI becomes fully self-aware.
But none of them did it with a hottie like Megan Fox in the lead.
That’s kind of what separates this movie from the modern Hollywood trash. They’ve been so desperate to create a female Terminator film that they forgot they could just create something new and people would probably like it.
PLOT
A father with two young children who is struggling to juggle his work and home life while his wife is in hospital waiting for heart surgery takes ownership of a lifelike AI bot named Alice by his daughter.
Alice is strong, smart and incredibly sexy. She will do anything for her owner. Anything. Obviously that includes killing - but I want to emphasize ‘anything’.
ABOUT THE FILM
This movie feels like its fresh from the late 90s - exploring new technology as a source of horror while remembering that the audience also like to look at a good-looking cast.
There is a bit to like about the movie, just as there is a bit to dislike.
Some spoiler talk coming up here just in case you haven’t seen the film yet.
Any sane person is going to wonder why this robot comes with a full working vagina. Why would a feature like that be installed onto this robot? She can be lifelike, but not exactly like a human and there was no allusion to her being a sex bot, right?
Also, why would the service centre have their system connect to the main network? Anyone doing troubleshooting in tech where they suspect a potential breach of a device would have a sandbox testing environment or something like Carbon Black to isolate the device from the whole network.
But then, if these two question did exist, then we wouldn’t have much of a movie, would we?
The movie paints a strangely bleak picture of the future where a hospital has robot doctors and orderlies, but human nurses. I suppose that’s a good sign for nurses everywhere!
On top of all the things that make no sense, such as why “working on a car” involves nothing but tightening bolts on the engine, the movie does have some interesting moments and some novel ideas that it seems to have pieced together from other movies, series and comics about AI, meaning it kind of lacks its own identity. A robot who can change her voice? Been done. Super strength? Seen it. Ability to fuck the husband while cooking dinner… hmm, that might be a new one.
We are going to see more and more movies about AI and robots - even right now there is the film Afraid that’s going toe to toe with this film, so be prepared to see this part of the market get oversaturated very quickly, and try to enjoy this film while you can.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
As dumb as almost everything was in the movie, I kind of liked it because Megan Fox wore a stupidly short skirt for no reason and the cat pillow in the girl’s bedroom is something you can buy from Ikea.
Using my patent pending GHOST rating, which stands for Great Horror Or Stupid Trash, this movie gets 2 ghosts. It’s a proper female Terminator movie, or at least the sequel will be when it comes out, but right now this is one of the more entertaining ‘AI will doom the world’ movies but too much belief suspension kind of ruins the end product.
But as always what did you think of it?
