Hot on the news that Donnie Yen has announced 3 movies at Cannes in 2023, I thought I’d take a quick look at those three movies – and the other projects Donnie Yen has planned for release in the future.
MISJUDGEMENT
First up is the Hong Kong and China co-production titled Misjudgment or Wu Pan in Chinese. Following in the footsteps of the classic Hong Kong action crime genre, this movie is about a man who is framed for drug trafficking by a criminal syndicate in order to protect the identity of the real culprit. Yen plays the older version of the character who’s case has been taken on a new prosecutor who risks his career to reveal the truth.
Two directors are linked to this film – Jie Han who directed Jackie Chan in the 2017 drama film Namiya and Edmond Wong who is more well known for being the screenwriter for the Ip Man films. Famous Hong Kong producer Raymond Wong is behind this film with Yen being the only announced cast member. This one is set for release in 2024
FLASHPOINT RESURGENCE
Next up is one of the most exciting titles on this list, Flashpoint Resurgence, a potential sequel or follow up to the 2007 action thriller with a massive cast that included Louis Koo, Collin Chou, Xing Yu and Fan Bingbing. The original is well known for its high energy action scenes and is liked amongst Yen fans. Yen is the only announced crew member for this film, which is listed to release 2024 and is unfortunately a mainland China production only.
IP MAN 5
Perhaps the biggest surprised announcement was Ip Man 5 – this one is strange as Part 4 was subtitled The Finale and was struggling in the action and story department and then of course ended with the death of Ip Man – so this one is going to be odd. Already Chinese netizens are subtitling the film Ip Man The Final End Part 1, Ip Man Battle of The Coffin and Ip Man 5 Multiverse. All jokes aside, could this movie follow Bruce Lee’s character instead? Set for release in 2025, we have a lot of time to speculate on this one.
There are four other movies listed on Yen’s filmography, including an action fantasy film called Outright Loser, Hidden Master set for release in 2024 is about an Asian American martial artist who returns to Hong Kong to trace their lineage. The long rumoured American film The Father with Frank Grillo, another American film called Golden Empire which is probably about as likely to release as the heavily rumoured Sleeping Dogs, and finally movie called The Master which is about immigrant from Hong Kong who sets up a Kung Fu School in the US in the 70s. Check out the ridiculous fan made poster that for some reason includes the Mortal Kombat logo, and young looking Yen as Ip Man and a Bruce Lee figure.
Which of these films are you looking forward to?
