A THOUSAND DAYS - Sewu Dino (Indonesia, 2023) - MINI REVIEW
That's like... almost 3 years!
Sri gets a new job working for a wealthy family. Her role is to spend five days with two other girls in a remote shack where they need to look after the family matriarch’s granddaughter whose been possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit’s hold on the girl will last for 1000 days, and Sri arrives at day 995. In order to ensure she survives, Sri needs to perform a daily washing ritual on the granddaughter, but when one of her co-workers fails to conduct the ritual correctly, all hell breaks loose in the shack.
Director Kimo Stamboel (Macabre, Ivanna) is back doing what he does best - making super creepy black magic horror flicks. And with the exception of a couple of out-of-place moments and cheesy effects, this movie is a great time.
An original idea, based on a story by Simpleman who seems to be the originator of most of the stories modern Indonesian horror movies are based on, mixed with no religious elements make this one of the more unique Indonesian horror flicks.
However, something is lost here in the translation. The origin of the curse, the reason it has to be 1000 days and what will happen after that 1000 days are more implied than told to the audience, leaving some head scratching moments and instances of confusion over the role of certain characters, like Sabdo.
Karina Suwandi is the standout in the role of Mbah Karsa, continuing her tradition of strong characters in popular horror films.
